Members of the Combustion Institute will be saddened to learn of the death of Gyorgy Makhviladze in Moscow, on 31st May, at the age of 72. He served for more than 20 years in the Institute for Problems in Mechanics, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, from which he developed many international collaborations. He was appointed to the Chair in Fire and Explosion Engineering at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), UK, in 1993. In 1994 he established the Centre in Fire and Explosion Studies and made enormous contributions to the development of Fire and Explosion Engineering nationally and internationally. He was a strong supporter of the International Seminars on Fire and Explosion Hazards. He retired from UCLan in May 2010 and became Emeritus Professor in Fire and Explosion Engineering. He will be badly missed.
