The Sugden Prize 2024 Panel Report

For the 2024 Sugden Award, 18 articles published in the year 2024 were nominated by CIBS members, and these papers were published in 10 different journals related to combustion. These papers were ranked by the Award Panel, which had five members from the CIBS community, including the Panel Chair. The Panel Chair gave 11 papers to each Panel member, who were asked to score each paper based on novelty, significance and scientific quality, such that each paper was scored by three independent assessors.  A total of 4 final papers were selected for the final round, where papers were further evaluated according to the award criteria, including substantial contribution to research and substantial contribution from younger authors.  The Award Panel evaluated and ranked the top papers to select the final winner - congratulations to the winners. In the process, panel members who co-authored nominated papers did not participate in the discussion of their paper.

The winner is “Dynamical Systems Characterization and Reduced Order Modeling of Thermoacoustics in a Lean Direct Injection Hydrogen Combustor" by Kumar et al., Journal of Engineering of Gas Turbines and Power, vol. 146(12), 2024.
